So I’ve been reading/listening to the biography, “C. s. lewis–a life [electronic resource] : Eccentric Genius, Reluctant Prophet.” – by Alister McGrath and it has been wonderful! I have always been a fan of Lewis’ and never really gave his history much thought. I love Lewis’s mind and how it works but,I never really knew his story. Some facts that I knew about him were that he lived during both world wars. I knew that he wrote many books other than The Chronicles of Narnia series. I knew that he was a professor at Oxford. I also knew that he wrote a lot but I was not aware of exactly how much the man wrote! Nor did I know that he was into poetry. In fact he wanted to become a famous poet! Unfortunately, this was not to be! Although, he did write poetry throughout his life and I believe that there is a collection of his poetry that can be purchased online or at some book stores. You can just search for his poetry and it will show up in various websites if you are interested.
Something else that I knew but didn’t realize to the extent of was, Lewis’s many contributions to Tolkien’s Lord of the Ring series including the Hobbit! Without Lewis, Tolkien would not have finished those series! I know that many of my friends would be emptier without the Lord of the Rings series! I am also a lover of the series and own a copy of The Silmarillion. I still haven’t read it all the way through but one of my aspirations is to read all of Tolkien’s works. I have that same aspiration with Lewis and Rowling and a few other authors! I am half way through the Harry Potter series! I have a long list of books that I want to read eventually! Audio books have helped tremendously! I can listen while I work! That’s funny. I thought of a line from a famous Disney movie when I wrote that. Whistle while you work! Anyway, sorry for the rabbit trail!
In my opinion, this biography is well written! There is so much about not only Lewis but Tolkien, World War I and World War II to be learned about. The view of english culture on education, literacy, and science during the time before, during, and after both world wars is fascinating! This is my first time reading a biography about Lewis so I might be quite biased on my view of this book. As a lover of knowledge, science, and history. I believe that I now have a better ability to read his works and have a deeper appreciation and understanding of them. Anyone person who is a lover of all things C. S. Lewis should read this biography!
Lewis’s life is something to be examined and understood within the context of the world around him. He was truly a unique man even though he had a difficult life. He managed to make something great of himself. Truly a man for the ages!
